What a maintenance engineer is actually reading

Specific power
kW per m³/min of compressed air. Usually the most expensive utility in the building per unit of work
Pressure dew point
ISO 8573-1 humidity class. Wet air ruins a paint finish long before it damages a tool
Tool wear
Cumulative minutes to change-out. A tool changed at a planned stop costs minutes; one that fails mid-cut costs the part and sometimes the fixture
Heat dissipation
The gap between process and air temperature. Closing while the spindle turns slowly is the condition that precedes failure
OEE
Availability × performance × quality — useful as a scoreboard, useless as a diagnosis
ISO 14224
The reliability and maintenance taxonomy, so the same equipment spine carries into oil and gas

ISO 14224, ISO 10816 and ISO 8573-1

ISO 14224 governs collection and exchange of reliability and maintenance data — the taxonomy that lets failure history mean the same thing across two sites. ISO 10816 sets the vibration zones. ISO 8573-1 defines compressed air purity classes, including the pressure dew point a paint line depends on.

The machining examples use the AI4I 2020 synthetic predictive-maintenance dataset. Its simulated failure conditions illustrate relationships between tool wear, temperature and spindle speed; they are not validated alarm limits for your equipment.

What a tool failure costs mid-cut

Changing a tool during a planned stop costs minutes. The same tool failing mid-cut costs the part, the cycle, and frequently the fixture — and the wear that predicted it was accumulating in plain sight the whole time.

The heat-dissipation case is worse, because neither reading looks wrong on its own. The process temperature is fine. The spindle speed is fine. Together they say the machine has stopped shedding the heat it is making.
