ISO 10816 / 20816 and IEC 61400-25

ISO 10816 and its successor 20816 define mechanical vibration evaluation by zone — the A/B/C/D boundaries an alarm limit is actually drawn from. IEC 61400-25 covers communications for wind power plant monitoring, which is the vocabulary a turbine SCADA already speaks.

Alerts cite the zone boundary rather than a tuned number, so a threshold can be argued with on its merits. Where a pack models nuclear site services, its scope is stated on the pack itself: balance-of-plant and building services only.

Reactor protection and safety instrumented functions are excluded by design. Those systems are qualified, licensed, and nowhere near a building management platform.

What an unplanned gearbox change costs

A gearbox caught in the alarm band is a planned lift with a crane booked. The same gearbox caught after failure is an unplanned lift, a longer outage, and whatever the weather window does to both.

The difference is not detection — the vibration was there either way. It is whether anyone was watching the gradient rather than the threshold.
